#JustStartToday: Fast and Easy Sharing on LinkedIn
LinkedIn is such a powerful tool for business that it simply cannot be ignored. This is the platform where you can get your morning news, learn more about your industry, or keep up with your current and past colleagues. LinkedIn is also a platform to share your knowledge and engage with your connections. This helps you build your brand as someone who has knowledge and expertise in a certain area.
There is no need to “plan” your LinkedIn activities. In this blog, I will give you some tips and tools to #JustStartToday with sharing content and engaging your audience.
Start your morning, with your beverage of choice (mine is coffee, specifically a mocha latte) and open up LinkedIn. Get ready to read some news.
I first review the “4 ways to keep in touch” box in the upper right hand corner. This box will list changes in your connections status such as new jobs. Take a moment to write a note of congratulations or hello – it’s a great way to stay in touch with your audience.
I don’t write a note for each update, but if it’s someone I want to engage with, I will. For example, if it’s a colleague from a current or past job that I haven’t spoken to in a while and I want to show them I’m thinking of them, I will write a note. Or if it’s a connection that is a potential client, I will write a note so they don’t forget about me. It takes me about 30 seconds to review my updates and write a note. Super easy for #JustStartToday.
I look at who viewed my profile. If you have a “Premium” account, you will see all the people that have viewed your profile. If you have a regular account, you only see a few. But look at who has been viewing your profile. This is an opportunity to engage – you could be talking to a potential client or getting in touch with an old friend.
I scroll through the updates my connections have made. If they have posted an interesting article, I will either share with my network or comment on their post.
“Interesting Articles” is something you define on your own. For me, I share or comment on articles that fit the ‘branding’ of myself, specifically articles on technology or marketing. This is a way to position myself as having knowledge in my field and for my followers to engage with me.
The actions you can take:
- Share: Hit the “Share” button. You will get a dialog box with the ability to add a comment. Add a comment if you want (I recommend adding a comment) – something short and related to why you are sharing the post.
- Like: If you want to “Like” the post, click on the “Like” button.
- Comment: If you want to comment, start typing your comment and press “Enter”.
How much time do you spend on LinkedIn a day – that is totally up to you. You can spend 10 minutes or 2 hours – whatever you have available. Read your updates in the morning and maybe go back for a few more minutes over your lunch hour. Try to get out there at least once a week, if not a couple times a week.
The important thing, #JustStartToday and do something. You not only will learn something, but you will start to build your brand and reputation to your followers.
